FAQ

Does it smell?

No. The separation of the urine from the solids is the key to no odor. When working properly it will have a slight earthy smell.

When should I empty it?

It is best to allow the solids to decompose before emptying your toilet. The longer you wait before emptying your toilet, the nicer the job will be. Many boaters will leave the solid wastes in the toilet over the winter and empty it in the spring. That may not be possible for some applications, but you will find that even in as little as one week much of the solid wastes have begun to decompose, and just the paper products are visible. It is best if you do not leave the liquid wastes in the tank for extended periods. While everyone is different, some urine will smell bad if allowed to sit for extended periods.

From our own experience, we know that a few hours after the last use, no unpleasant, fecal smell is more perceptible. Furthermore, there is no “container full”, e.g. as with a standard camping toilet, you will be much more flexible with the separating toilet, as far as disposal is concerned.

Where do I empty it?

Urine, due to its nitrogen content, is a great fertilizer for trees and in a diluted state for other plants. You can of course pour the container into any toilet or chemical toilet disposal.

Ideally dispose of the contents of the solid container on a compost heap. After a year of rotting time you will gain high quality humus. If you are on the road, the compost can be disposed of in normal waste refuse or buried without bags. Keep sufficient distance from lakes and rivers.

How to clean my toilet?

The urine container can be rinsed with water. If urine deposits should settle, this can be removed with vinegar.

The toilet bowl has a smooth surface and no edges, like an ordinary water-rinsed toilet. This construction makes cleaning very easy. If you want to clean the bowl, we recommend spraying it with diluted vinegar (1: 1) and then rinsing with toilet paper. If something should end up next to the flap, you can remove any traces with a damp toilet paper.

You do not have to clean the solids container. The residues after an emptying serve as a composting starter for the next filling.

How to prep after emptying?

After emptying your toilet you combine one coco coir brick (650 g) with 1,5 to 2 l of water. Let it swell, it will give 9 l of finished substrate.

Using hot water will quicken the swelling but it’s not necessary.

How does it separate liquids and solids?

When the trap door is closed, the urine from anywhere in the bowl will flow to the bottle. When the trap door is open, a person is sitting, and the urine will still divert to the front.

This makes the Nature’s Head the only separation toilet where men can urinate while standing.

Can I use it standing up?

You can stand to urinate, but is recommended to sit. There is not a lift up toilet seat, so males should be conscious about not leaving liquids on the seat.

Why is the toilet seat molded into the unit

This toilet seat is much simpler to clean. Additionally, this seat is sturdier, it won’t crack or break. Because we designed this toilet for the “mobile” market, this became a safety issue. NH has spoken with boaters who have had a toilet seat break off in rough conditions. With some toilets, boaters have lifted the seat to sit on the base of the toilet to avoid this problem. (That can’t be comfortable). While this isn’t as likely with an RV, it would not be out of the question.

Do I need to run the fan all of the time?

If using the toilet full time, using the fan full time will enable the compost to process faster. If you are not going to be using the toilet for 10 days or more, unplug the fan, as the compost would tend to become too dry and hard. Do empty and clean the urine bottle before leaving.

If this happens, you can add a small amount of water and mix the solids container with the crank handle.

Empty and clean the urine container before the toilet will be unused for a longer time.

How much power does the fan use?

The currently installed fans consume 70 mA at 12 V, the consumption is under 1.7 Ah within 24 h.

What is the weight of the unit?

The gross empty weight is 12,7 kg.

What are the dimensions of the unit?

At the widest part, the toilet is 48,3 cm.

It is 51 cm high and thus also offers larger people a pleasant seat height.

Other dimensions are:

  • 45,1 cm from front to rear
  • 33 cm wide at the base
  • 41,3 cm wide at the seat

If your space is cramped, we recommend the spider handle as it does not extend as far as the standard crank handle.

The flexible ventilation hose also allows rotatable attachment.

Will freezing temperatures damage the toilet?

Empty the urine bottle. The compost and toilet will be unharmed in freezing weather.

Does composting work in cold conditions?

Composting works from 13 °C and warmer. The warmer it is, the faster it compost. When the temperature drops to freezing, the compost will be dormant until heat is introduced into the area.

Can I put vegetable scraps in the solids bin?

No. Vegetable wastes could slow the composting process, and the solid container would fill up faster. Therefore only fill coconut fiber into the solids container.

In the US, coconut fiber seems more difficult to get than peat moss, which is why it is often used there. For reasons of environmental protection, we use exclusively coconut fiber. If you are planning a longer trip, you can take coconut fiber as a dried / pressed brick. We calculate 650 g of coconut fiber per re-filling, which results in approx. 9 l finished substrate. You can purchase the appropriate product in our shop.

Should you ever want to use peat moss as a substrate, please make sure that it is not treated / fertilized. This could unfavorable affect composting.

Can the toilet be used in a basement?

Yes it will work fine in a basement and any room or closet where a toilet is required.

Can it be used on a boat or RV with a wet bath (shower in the head)?

Yes. Make sure that the mounting brackets are well sealed to prevent water from entering. You will also need to drill a hole in the urine tank holder to drain any water from it, or cover it when you shower.

Please call us for additional help when you are ready to install.

Do I need an extra seat for children?

No. Our experience shows that children learn the right use of the toilet intuitive.

What kind of toilet paper must be used?

Any kind of toilet paper will work, however single ply paper breaks down quicker. Many single ply papers are approved for septic tanks.

We ourselves use a separate bucket / bag for the toilet paper to extend the time until emptying.

Is it ok to dispose of tampons in the bin?

We do not recommend this. Many brands of tampons are made from a mix of rayon and non-organic cotton, and are commonly chlorine-bleached. These will not decompose. Organic, 100% cotton tampons will compost, but will take a significant amount of time.
